The end section of the strings near where they attach to the plate is often muted with felt to reduce unwanted dissonance in lesser pianos.
The scale design of each Cristofori grand, however, includes a Duplex Scale that precisely tunes these end section distances to vibrate sympathetically with the speaking length of the strings.
This creates a more resonant and singing tone in the mid to upper ranges of the piano where the Duplex Scale is used.
